Exploring Amsterdam and Utrecht: A Four-Day Itinerary of Must-See Attractions
If you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands, there are two cities that should be at the top of your list: Amsterdam and Utrecht. Amsterdam is super popular with lots to do, but Utrecht is lively with great bars and restaurants, and you’ll always have a good time there. So, both cities are definitely worth checking out!
To help you make the most of your visit, we’ve put together a five-day itinerary that highlights the must-see attractions in both cities. Keep reading to find out more!
Day 1: Amsterdam – Canals, Art, and History
Morning:
Begin your Amsterdam adventure at the Anne Frank House, to gain an insight into the story of Anne Frank and her family during World War II. It’s a moving and educational experience that’s not to be missed, and we found it to be very interesting.
Afternoon:
Next, explore the stunning and Van Gogh Museum, where you can immerse yourself in the works of Vincent van Gogh, the Dutch master. The museum’s collection is a stunning showcase of his talent and evolution as an artist, and it’s totally worth a visit. Make sure to book in advance on the website as the tickets sell out extremely fast!!
Evening:
As the sun sets, take a walk along the famous Amsterdam Canals. You can join a guided canal cruise or explore by foot. The picturesque canals, illuminated at night, create a romantic and enchanting atmosphere.
Day 2: Amsterdam – Culture and Cuisine
Morning:
Visit the iconic Rijksmuseum, home to an extensive collection of Dutch art and history. Be sure to see Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch” and other iconic masterpieces – absolutely stunning! Again, make sure to book in advance as tickets can sell out fast.
Afternoon:
Savor a taste of Dutch culture by trying traditional Dutch pancakes, known as poffertjes, at a local café (they’re delicious!). Afterward, explore the trendy neighborhood of De Pijp (also known as the Latin quarter), celebrated for its diverse culinary offerings and charming streets.
Evening:
Now, for a unique Amsterdam experience, head to the world-famous Red Light District. It comes to life as day turns into night, and it’s an area with a unique atmosphere that’s both fascinating and historic. Day 3: Amsterdam – Chocolate Delights and Iconic Museums
Get ready for a sweet adventure that feels like stepping into a real-life Willy Wonka wonderland at the amazing Tony’s Chocolonely Super Store. This unique chocolate company is on a mission to make chocolate 100% free from any bad stuff, just like the dreamy world of Willy Wonka. Inside their colorful shop, you’ll not only see the most creative chocolate flavors but also get to create them! In fact, you can create your own chocolate bar and taste it!
Afternoon:
Next, make your way to the world-renowned Madame Tussauds Amsterdam Museum. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with lifelike wax figures of your favourite celebrities, historical figures, and pop culture icons. Evening:
As the day turns to night, why not explore Amsterdam’s unique side? Head over to The Bulldog The First Coffeeshop, a legendary spot. It’s been at the heart of Amsterdam’s coffee shop culture for a long time. Enjoy the relaxed vibes, maybe try out something special, and experience the distinctive atmosphere of this iconic place. Day 4: Utrecht – Towers, Tranquility, and Art
Morning:
Take a train to Utrecht, a short journey from Amsterdam. With the Intercity 3055 from Amsterdam Centraal it’s no more than 25 minutes.
Begin your Utrecht adventure with a climb up the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. The panoramic views from the top are simply breathtaking.
Afternoon:
Explore the enchanting canals of Oudegracht in Utrecht. Stroll along the water and perhaps even take a canal boat tour to see the city from a different perspective.
Evening:
A relaxing evening is the perfect end for this day. Dine at one of the many waterside restaurants along Oudegracht: the ambiance is both serene and charming, and the view is incredible.
Day 5: Utrecht – Museums, Biking, and Farewell
Morning:
