7 REASONS TO VISIT VENICE DURING CARNIVAL
Written With The Contribution Of A Local (2024)The Venetian carnival is famous worldwide, and it is one of the most unique events you could ever imagine: during this period, the “calli” (streets) are filled with people wearing the most bizarre costumes, shows take place in every corner, and marvellous parades are organised throughout the city.
Let’s start by saying that if you are agoraphobic or simply hate busy places, then this is not for you.
However, I think the Carnival in Venice is something worth seeing at least once in a lifetime. Let’s find out why!
1) It’s the oldest Carnival in the world.
In the XVIII century, Venice was already visited by people all around the world, arriving in the city in February to admire the stupefying Carnival. Still nowadays, visiting Venice in those days feels a bit like going back through time: the streets take on an eighteenth-century look, and elaborate costumes are omnipresent. So picturesque!
2) The Venetian masks
The nowadays famous Venetian masks were used, in the past, by gamblers and prostitutes to stay anonymous. However, in the XVIII century, these were prohibited except during the Carnival period.
Today, in some shops, it’s still possible to buy the original masks used centuries ago!
3) It was prohibited for 200 years
When Napoleon took control over Venice, he put an end to the public holidays, like the Carnival. This was prohibited from 1797 to 1979. Since then, the event has grown its success, attracting every year more and more tourists.
4) Learn to ride a gondola
Although one of the many attractions in Venice is to take a ride on the gondola, some classes actually teach YOU to ride it! How fun is that?!
5) The Venetian opera
The “Teatro La Fenice” is the main opera house in Venice. It was burnt three times, and it was rebuilt in 2004 for the last time.
During the Carnival, this theatre hosts a grand ball, where you can enjoy the traditional dances, music and costumes!
6) The angel’s flight
During the Carnival days, in St. Mark’s Square, the traditional “angel’s flight” takes place. This antique tradition has taken place since the XVI century.
An acrobat crosses the square, walking on a suspended rope with the only help of a barbell.
7) Casanova in the Doge’s Palace
Casanova is one of the most famous Venetian seducers. Known for having seduced thousands of women, he was imprisoned in the Doge’s Palace for reasons still unknown.
During the Venetian Carnival, in the Doge’s Palace, “Carnival with Casanova” often takes place. Here, you can taste typical traditional sweets and prosecco and enjoy the dances and live music.
