  • Live Chess Tradition: Immerse yourself in the town’s unique tradition of live chess matches, held every two years in the stunning Piazza degli Scacchi. This really is something not to be missed!
  • Medieval Architecture: Admire well-preserved medieval architecture as you stroll through narrow streets lined with charming houses and boutiques.

Curiosity: If you find yourself with some free time, I highly recommend a visit to the Straw Hat Museum. It offers a fascinating journey into the rich history of hat craftsmanship, once a vital source of support for numerous local families.

3. Cittadella: A Walled City Steeped in History

  • Duomo di Cittadella: Visit the beautiful Cathedral (Duomo) and appreciate its intricate architecture.

Curiosity: Cittadella is the only walled city in Europe with a fully accessible walkway along the battlements. Moreover, before the fortified village, there was a settlement dating back to the Bronze Age in this location!

Curiosity: Explore Monselice’s surroundings within the Colli Euganei and discover hidden grottoes and pathways. Here is where nature and history meet, creating enchanting spaces waiting to be explored.

5. Chioggia: Little Venice

  • Fish Market: Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the historical fish market, where local fishermen bring in their daily catch. We love it every time!

Curiosity: The Refugium Peccatorum holds the legend of a mysterious treasure. It tells of a very poor family with five children, including a little girl. One day, during a prayer, the young girl heard a mysterious voice telling her to decapitate a statue. The girl obeyed, and upon beheading the statue, she found a treasure of gold coins inside, which she promptly handed to her parents, thus turning the family’s fortunes around. Popular belief suggests that the voice belonged to the spirit of one of the deceased buried right under the Cathedral or in the adjacent cemetery.

Curiosity: Among Este’s most significant traditions is the “Giostra dell’Estense,” a historical celebration held annually in June. During the event, residents wear traditional costumes and engage in an exhilarating equestrian competition. It is worth to attend the event if you’re visiting in June!

Curiosity: If you find yourself with some time, I highly recommend making a stop at ‘Bigoleria La Rocca.’ This gem crafts fresh traditional pasta (‘bigoli’) paired with an array of delightful condiments. We stumbled upon this charming spot while exploring the town and couldn’t resist going back three times. It’s that good!
