When planning a holiday in one of the most visited cities in the world (more than 20 million people every year), choosing the right accommodation is an essential part of your trip planning. When you have never been to a city yourself, understanding the best areas to stay in can be challenging. And, in a city like Venice, if you are low on a budget, finding something suitable for your pockets can seem pretty much impossible. Don’t worry! My boyfriend Kris grew up in Venice, and he helped me write this article with all the info you need to know when choosing the right place to stay in, and the best hotels and B&Bs for any budget! The best areas to stay in, within walking distance from the main attractions, are: San Polo, St. Mark, Cannaregio, Santa Croce and Dorsoduro. The prices vary between the districts, offering the possibility to have a fantastic holiday for any pocket. Keep reading to find out the best hotels for each district!

San Polo

San Polo is the oldest city’s quarter, and it is very close to St. Mark’s and the Rialto bridge. Surrounded by the city’s most important attractions, like the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Rialto’s market, and many typical bars and restaurants, it’s an ideal location for your holiday.

In this area, you can find hotels for any budget, although it really depends on how long you book your stay in advance. Obviously, the earlier you book, the less you pay!

Suggested Accommodations in San Polo District

Palazzetto Madonna: At walking distance from the Rialto bridge, this fabulous hotel is situated in a historic building. Some of the rooms have a fantastic terrace with a view of the canal.

San Polo Star: This guest house is one of the cheapest in the area. However, it has amazing reviews, and its rooms are simple and in a perfect location.

Hotel dell’Orologio: Elegant hotel in a perfect position. All the attractions are within walking distance.

H10 Plazzo Casanova: 4-star hotel with a terrace and a bar, really close to all the points of interest.

St. Mark

St Mark, Venice

St. Mark is, undoubtedly, the most famous Venetian quarter. In fact, it is here that you will find the most important attractions of the city, like the Basilica, the Clock Tower, and the Teatro La Fenice.

Being the city’s heart, St. Mark can be pretty expensive. However, its stunning charm will leave you breathless from the first moment you’ll lay your eyes on the massive and globally famous St. Mark’s Square.

The beauty of this district can be observed by getting lost in the numerous alleys filled with typical restaurants and characteristic boutiques.

Suggested Accommodations in St. Mark

Monaco & Grand Canal: This 4-star hotel offers an amazing view of the Canal Grande. The rooms are characterised by an elegant and antique design, and the hotel’s restaurant offers high-standard typical Venetian dishes.

Hotel Casa Petrarca: Cheaper option in the area. This hotel has some rooms with private toilets and others with a common one (this is probably the best option if you are travelling on a low budget). The hotel is situated in a XIV century building, in an excellent position.

Hotel Bonvecchiati: A 4-star hotel with rooms featuring an incredible view of the city and the canal. It also has a private dock with its gondole.

Hotel Montecarlo: At walking distance from St. Mark’s Square, this hotel is situated in an XVII century building, with superb Venetian-style rooms.

Cannaregio

Cannaregio District, Venice

Definitely less crowded than St. Mark, the Cannaregio district is not far from the city’s main attractions. If you are a history lover, then you will absolutely love this area. This historic quarter, in fact, hides authentic ancient cultures and traditions, like the Jewish Ghetto.

Cannaregio is one of the best areas to stay in Venice, with excellent accommodations in a very good location and affordable prices.

Alle Guglie Boutique Hotel: Located in an excellent location, close to markets and shops, this hotel is within walking distance from the Rialto bridge and St. Mark’s Square. The rooms are traditionally decorated in a Venetian style, with a view on the rooftop, the city or the bridge.

Hotel Principe: Lovely hotel, offers rooms furnished in a Venetian décor. It also has a splendid terrace with a view of the Grand Canal.

Hotel al Vagon: Situated within walking distance from the Rialto bridge, this hotel has characteristic rooms traditionally furnished in a Venetian style, some with a view of the canal.

Al Ponte Antico: Historic hotel with luxury decor, within walking distance from the St. Mark’s Basilica and the Rialto bridge. It also features stunning views on the Canal Grande.

Santa Croce

Santa Croce is the only Venetian district in which cars can circulate. Here, you can find charming buildings with a view of the Canal Grande, as well as numerous characteristic alleys.

Try to avoid the West part of the city, as it’s more industrial.

Santa Croce is one of the most suggested places to stay in Venice not only because it’s a really nice district, but it’s also connected with a bus to the airport, making it a really comfortable location.

Dorsoduro

This district is within walking distance from all the main attractions but less expensive than St. Mark and San Polo. Here, you can admire the characteristic Venetian alleys and some of the city’s most important museums, like the Galleria dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum.

The rooms feature Art Deco furnishings, while the hotel also has a panoramic roof terrace with sun loungers and a wine bar, where you can taste samples of the local cuisine.

Ca’ San Trovaso: B&B featuring a roof terrace with a stunning view of the city and Venetian-style decorated rooms. A typical Italian breakfast is served in the rooms. Excellent location, within walking distance from the Galleria dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum.

Casa Di Sara: Charming B&B featuring antique furniture, not far from St. Mark’s Square and a few minutes walking from the Galleria dell Accademia. It also has a lovely private garden, and it offers a tasty typical Italian breakfast.
