How to Travel Low-Cost: 12 Easy Steps
Who said that traveling has to break the bank?!
Trust me, in all these years I definitely could not afford the luxury of travelling the world. However, I always managed to book very low-cost holidays and explore so many beautiful places!
With a few smart strategies, you can explore the world on a budget. Here’s a simple guide to help you book your travels without spending too much.
1. Be Flexible with Dates and Destinations
I know it’s predictable, but the first rule of low-cost travel is, of course, flexibility.
If you can travel during off-peak seasons, you’ll find better deals on flights and accommodations.
Use tools like Skyscanner (personally, one of my favourites) to see which dates are cheapest to fly.
Sometimes, traveling a day earlier or later can save you a lot of money.
2. Use Fare Comparison Websites
Websites like Kayak, Momondo, and Skyscanner compare prices from different airlines and travel agencies.
This helps you find the best deals available. Don’t just rely on one site; check a few to ensure you’re getting the best price!
3. Sign Up for Fare Alerts
Many travel websites offer fare alert services. Enter your preferred destinations and dates, and they’ll notify you when prices drop.
I always keep an eye on alerts, as this can be a great way to snag a deal without constantly checking prices yourself.
4. Consider Alternative Airports
Sometimes flying into a smaller or nearby airport can be cheaper than landing at a major hub.
For example, if you’re flying from Edinburgh, check prices from London, as this is usually cheaper, and you can easily find very cheap flights from Edinburgh to London.
5. Book in Advance
While last-minute deals can be found, it’s generally cheaper to book flights and accommodations well in advance. Aim to book flights at least a few months before your trip.
For accommodations, 3-6 months ahead is usually a good window for the best rates.
Of course, I know this is not always possible, but keep in mind that the general rule is: “The earliest, the better”.
7. Travel Light
Many budget airlines charge for checked bags, so try to travel with just a carry-on.
Not only will this save you money, but it will also make your trip more convenient and hassle-free.
I usually use this backpack, as it’s exactly the maximum size allowed on low-cost flights, you can take it in the cabin with you, and you can fit so many things in it!
8. Use Public Transportation
Taxis and rideshares can add up quickly.
Research public transportation options at your destination. Buses, trains, and even bikes can be much cheaper ways to get around and offer a more local experience.
9. Stay in Budget Accommodations
Hotels can be expensive, but there are plenty of budget-friendly alternatives.
Hostels, guesthouses, and Airbnb can offer cheaper rates, especially if you don’t mind sharing a space or staying slightly outside the city center.
This is something we always do when travelling on a low-budget – always book a place with a kitchen you can use to cook your own meals!
Have a look below at some deals on Booking.com and plan your next holiday:
10. Cook Your Own Meals
Eating out three times a day can quickly deplete your travel funds.
If you can’t stay at places with kitchen facilities or book accommodations with free breakfast, visit local markets or look for some cheap options instead of going to the first restaurant you find.
Not only will this save money, but it also gives you a chance to experience local culture more deeply.
11. Look for Free Activities
Many destinations offer a wealth of free activities. Parks, museums with free entry days, walking tours, and public festivals are great ways to explore without spending a lot.
Do some research beforehand to find free or low-cost attractions at your destination.
Most countries have free entry days to several attractions during the week, so that’s definitely something to look for!
12. Use Travel Rewards and Points
If you have a credit card that offers travel rewards, use those points to offset costs.
Many cards offer sign-up bonuses that can be redeemed for flights, hotels, and car rentals.
Just make sure to use them wisely and avoid racking up debt.
Final Thoughts
Traveling on a budget requires some planning and flexibility, but the rewards are worth it.
By following these tips, you can explore new places without draining your bank account.
Happy travels!
