WHERE TO STAY IN NAPLES

Complete Guide 2024 (FROM A LOCAL)

If you are planning a holiday to the Southern Italian city, you must know the best areas to stay in. Naples is a huge city, and choosing the right place to stay in is an important decision when planning your trip. As some of you already know, I grew up in Naples, and I still go there at least once a year; unfortunately, my parents don’t live in the city centre and moving around Naples with public transports it’s not easy at all. Therefore, I often need to book hotels or B&Bs.

In this article, you will find all the tips you need about the best areas to stay in Naples in complete safety and some suggestions on accommodations for any pocket!

Historic Centre

Naples Historic Centre

The first area I would suggest if you are unsure of where to stay in Naples, is the Historical Centre. This is the heart of the city, and it is very well connected to almost everything. The Metropolitana, in fact, connects the city centre to many other parts of the city.

Especially if it is the first time you visit the city, you could reach the majority of the attractions by walk from the historic centre. Moreover, Naples’ historical centre has been considered World Heritage of Unesco since 1995, and here you will feel the true Neapolitan vibrant culture! This area includes the streets of San Gregorio Armeno, Spaccanapoli, and Decumani.

Being in the centre of the city, the hotels in here could be a bit expensive. If you are low on a budget, have a look at some exclusive offers!

Suggested Accommodations in Naples Historical Centre:

Hotel Piazza Bellini: A 16th-century building in the historical centre, very close to the subway!

Napoliamo Guest House: An exceptional guest house in the heart of Naples, offering affordable prices and some rooms with a view of the city!

La Smorfia: Really close to San Gregorio Armeno, this superb accomodation is situated in a borbonic palace!

Paladin Home: situated in Piazzetta Nilo, in the historical centre, close to many night locals and the major city’s attractions.

Seaside

Caracciolo Seaside, Naples
One of the most stunning areas of Naples, the Lungomare Caracciolo is the city’s seaside. This area offers breathtaking landscapes, and it is often crowded with events, especially in summer. The Lungomare is very close to the city centre and Via Toledo, the main shopping street.

The seaside is populated with panoramic restaurants where you can taste the amazing Neapolitan food.

The prices in this area are a bit higher, because of the presence of many luxury hotels. However, I’ll try my best to list some suggestions for any budget!

Suggested Accommodations on the Lungomare Caracciolo:

Santa Lucia Essential Home: Managed by a private host, this home is situated on the seaside and very close to the fascinating Ovo Castle.

Grand Hotel Vesuvio: Maybe one of the most beautiful hotels in Naples, this luxury accommodation offers a view of the Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples. Definitely expensive, but it provides all the comforts you need and a great location!

Mastropasqua BB: Situated in the Lungomare area, this is one of the most affordable accommodations close to the seaside, with views of the city.

Hotel Royal Continental: Famous hotel in Naples, each room has a balcony with a stunning view of the Ovo Castle!

Chiaia

Chiaia district is one of the most elegant areas in Naples. It is really well connected and full of shops, bars and restaurants. It is famous at night for its “baretti“, chic bars filled with young people until late.

Close to the seaside, the area is mostly populated by locals, and it is one of the safest areas to stay.

Even though you will not find many attractions in this district, it is close to Via Toledo (one of the main streets), the famous Piazza del Plebiscito, and the historical centre; from here, you can reach pretty much anything.

Suggested Accommodations in Chiaia:

Belledonne Suite & Gallery: Elegant B&B in the heart of Chiaia, not too expensive and close to the historical centre and Piazza del Plebiscito (the main square in Naples).

Hotel Plebiscito Aparthotel: Very central location, a few steps from the famous San Carlo Theatre and the Royal Palace, and very close to Piazza del Plebiscito and the Galleria Umberto I.

Boutique Hotel Metro 900: Fabulous hotel close to the seaside and the subway, as well as the Mergellina Train Station (only a few steps far).

The Britannique Hotel: Situated in an excellent location, at walking distance from Via Dei Mille (elegant street with the most important shops) and close to the subway. Most rooms offer a stunning view of the Gulf of Naples.

Vomero

Vomero Naples
I have lived in this area for many years, and I can assure you, it’s one of the safest areas of Naples. It’s an elegant district situated on a hilltop, filled with chic restaurants and shops, fine cafes and ice-cream parlours. The neighbourhood is well connected to the city centre with the Funicolare, which takes only 10 minutes to reach the heart of the city.

Here you can find the Castel Sant’Elmo and the Museum, which offers a breathtaking view of the city.

It’s a really charming area, but it’s 3.5km far from the city centre, and the Funicolare doesn’t stay open until late and can be a bit expensive if you want to travel a lot; therefore, if you don’t have a car and decide to not rent one, maybe it’s not the best option for you.

Suggested Accommodations in Vomero:

B&B Luca Giordano: Nice B&B situated in Vomero’s main street, it also has a sea view room.

La Casa di Noa Napoli: Situated in the district’s heart, this is a really nice home providing private parking as well (essential in this area, as it’s difficult to find a parking spot!).

Eco di Napoli: Very comfortable and affordable B&B situated in a great location, also offering the airport shuttle service. They have a lovely shared terrace with a Jacuzzi, which they cover with an igloo in winter!

Residenza Scarlatti: Another excellent B&B in the heart of Vomero’s district, very affordable and with a nice fitted terrace.

Posillipo

Posillipo, Naples
A luxury residential area on a hilltop full of classy bars and restaurants, Posillipo is one of Naples’ most beautiful areas. It offers many exceptional accommodations, often accompanied by stunning landscapes.

Although this area is really gorgeous, it is 7km far from the historical centre, and it’s not particularly well connected. If you have a car or decide to rent one, it’s definitely worth looking at some hotels here; otherwise, I wouldn’t suggest it.

Suggested Accommodations in Posillipo:

La Stella dei Venti: Excellent B&B in the centre of Posillipo’s district, it offers rooms with a balcony featuring a fabulous sea view.

Napoli d’Amare B&B: A few steps from the beach, this elegant B&B is one of the most affordable in the area, featuring an excellent location.

Le Stanze di Sissi: These luxury suites are situated in one of the most beautiful streets in Posillipo. The B&B also offers a fitted panoramic terrace and a garden.

La Casetta di Posillipo: This entire apartment is situated very close to La Gaiola Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Naples. It also features a patio, a garden and free private parking!

General Tips

When looking for accommodation in Naples, location has the priority, especially if you don’t have your own vehicle or decide to not rent one: you really don’t want to spend half of your holiday waiting for public transports!

Try to avoid the peripheric areas as much as possible. Also, even though you will find very low prices for hotels and B&B in the Central Station area (Piazza Garibaldi), I wouldn’t suggest you book your hotel there. Despite being pretty central and well connected, the area becomes a bit dodgy from the late afternoon onwards.
